Founder & Artistic Director | Music Educator | Creative Visionary

Meet Glynnis

Every great artistic journey begins with someone who believes in the potential of others.

Glynnis Nieves has dedicated her life to music education, mentorship, and creating meaningful opportunities for young artists to discover their voice. Her journey began as a student teacher while pursuing her college education. It grew into a lifelong mission of helping students experience the confidence, creativity, and connection that the arts can provide.

Beginning as an assistant band teacher, Glynnis continued to grow as an educator, eventually becoming a Head Teacher responsible for curriculum development, student experiences, and creative programming. For nearly 20 years, she led the Miami Rock Orchestra, a student-centered piano, guitar, and drum ensemble that became a foundation for her belief that young musicians are capable of extraordinary things when given the right environment to grow.

Throughout her career, Glynnis always believed that music could be more than performance — it could be a way to connect, inspire, and create meaningful conversations.

That belief became the foundation for Miami School of the Arts.

During her time as an educator, a conversation with a student revealed a deeper need among young people: the need to feel heard, valued, and accepted. After asking her students about their own experiences, Glynnis discovered that many had faced moments of feeling excluded or misunderstood.

Inspired by their stories, she created an original student musical centered around those experiences — using the arts as a way to give young people a voice and bring important conversations into the spotlight.

The response from students was powerful. They saw themselves represented, their voices celebrated, and their experiences transformed into something meaningful.

That moment confirmed what Glynnis had always believed:

The arts are not just about creating performers. They are about creating confident, compassionate, and courageous individuals.

In 2018, Glynnis helped found Miami School of the Arts with a vision to create a place where creativity could thrive, students could be empowered, and young artists could be celebrated for who they are.

Now approaching its 8th anniversary, MSA has grown into a vibrant artistic community featuring signature experiences such as MayFest, Founders Day, Yuletide Magic, and Summer Beats, as well as innovative programs, including the Mpowered Beginners Program and the Mpowered Artists Program.

Today, Glynnis continues to lead MSA with the same belief that started it all:

Every child has an artist inside them waiting to be discovered.
