Meet Daniel

Some of the greatest teachers are those who have lived the journey themselves.

For Daniel Martinez, music began as a young student discovering his own voice behind the drums. His journey started at the same academy where many of MSA’s earliest creative roots were formed, studying under his mentor and founding leader Nelson from a young age through his graduation.

As a student musician, Daniel became part of the Miami Rock Orchestra community and continued developing as a performer through the Latin and Jazz Ensembles at Miami Arts Charter School. He also became a member of PTM, performing throughout Miami at events including the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and Carnaval on the Mile.

Through these experiences, Daniel discovered not only his passion for performance, but also the confidence and connection that music can create. Like many young artists, Daniel was once a shy performer. Music gave him the courage to collaborate, express himself, and find his place among other musicians.

That same journey is now what he shares with his students.

Daniel began his teaching path as a teaching assistant before becoming an assistant instructor and eventually a full-time music educator. Over the years, he has grown into a leader within the MSA community, becoming the director of Drumsemble and helping young percussionists develop their skills, confidence, and love for music.

Known for his playful personality, patience, energy, and dedication, Daniel has a unique ability to connect with students of all ages. He creates an environment where students feel encouraged to take risks, work hard, and believe in their own potential.

One of the most special traditions at MSA has grown around Daniel himself. Because he was once a quiet and reserved performer, his students and fellow Mpowered Leaders have become his biggest supporters. Whenever Daniel’s name is announced during performances, the cheers that follow have become legendary — a reflection of the deep respect and affection his students have for him.
